What is it possible to create with wood?

Inspirational projects from the USA

Mass timber buildings are definitely on the rise in the USA.

Evolving codes and the increasing availability of mass timber is inspiring firms to research and invest in ambitious mass timber viability projects.

Currently, there are 4 concept projects being researched and conceptualized in the US that are trail-blazing what’s possible with wood:

1. Timber Bridge in Brooklyn

For the past few years, architect Jun Aizaki of CRÈME has been working on the Timber Bridge at LongPoint Corridor. Between Brooklyn and Queens, there is an opportunity to improve pedestrian transit, create green spaces, and connect the communities of Long Island City and Greenpoint.

2. Timber Towers in Philadelphia

Led by Sean McTaggart, a group of designers from Hickok Cole were shortlisted for the Skyhive Skyscraper challenge where they are trying to demonstrate the viability of a mass timber high-rise project as an alternative to steel and concrete. In the process of designing a new landmark on Philadelphia’s skyline.

3. 80-story River Beech Tower in Chicago

In a city full of pioneering towers and skyscrapers, the River Beech project can become a new chapter in the history of Chicago's architectural wonders. This is because it is an 80-storey wooden tower, a research project done between the University of Cambridge, Perkins + Will and Thornton Tomasetti. A milestone in the development of high-tech wood that assumes itself as the building material of the 21st century.

4. Mass Timber Multifamily in San Francisco

Jose Brunner, a designer at DLR Groups San Francisco office, designed a modular timber tower atop a landmark building in San Francisco’s Mission District for the Mission: Housing design competition. This project uses mass timber—a strong but light-weight material for alternative development, providing additional housing in the heart of the city without the need to demolish of existing structures or displacement of existing residents.
