Google is building a City of the Future in Toronto

14 | FÉV | 2019

Project intends to use wood throughout the city

Google's Sidewalk Labs is moving ahead with an "unprecedented" project: tall wooden buildings, large public spaces, and heated snow-melt floors in what will be the largest development in the coastal zone of Toronto, Canada.

Named Quayside, the area will have 9.5 hectares and justify an investment of approximately 50 million dollars at an early stage.

Quayside, which will include about 3,000 residential units, will be the largest real estate project built primarily with high wooden beams.

Project proposes the use of wood throughout the city

Sidewalk Labs suggests the construction of all buildings with local and renewable wood in order to create an accessible and sustainable environment, supporting the industry of the country.

Each city building will have a modular structure, offering a variety of spaces such as residences, offices and shops.

Plenty of public spaces for people to "interact without mobile phones"

The existence of squares between buildings such as shops, coffee shops and parks overlooking the coastal area, emphasize the cult of nature and relaxation at the same time promoting social interaction.

Public space designed to adapt to climate during the year

Lightweight, transparent and movable facades that act as curtains would extend to protect public spaces from wind and snowfall.

The floor itself would have a heating system to melt ice and snow during the winter, while LED lights ensure nighttime lighting.

The company and the Toronto Waterfront point out that technologies could lead to new construction techniques in the future, reducing the costs of the houses and their maintenance.
